Children, toddlers, and infants are all prone to fixations (misalignments) of the spine and extremities. It is extremely important to find and correct any fixations that may have occurred from the birthing process, or the numerous repetitive motions children go through when learning to sit up, crawl, and walk.
Many spinal problems in adults can begin as early as birth. Birthing methods can stress an infant’s spine and nerve system. The result to the nerve system can be the cause of many newborn health problems such as colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections. Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, it is beneficial to have newborns checked immediately. Learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment. Please note that, chiropractic adjustments are modified to the child’s size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are gentle and safe for the child’s developing structure.

A Parent’s Guide to Chiropractic Care for Children
How could my child benefit from chiropractic care?
Chiropractic care is based on checking the spine for misalignments and the subsequent impairment of the nervous system. The bones of the spine, or vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord, which carries information from the brain to the body and back to the brain again. The misalignments of the spine can impinge and interfere with the functional ability of the nerve to transmit this information.
Since the nervous system controls and coordinates the function of all of the systems of the body, any aspect of health may benefit from chiropractic adjustments by allowing the body to function more optimally and giving the body the opportunity to heal itself
Is chiropractic care safe for my child?
Chiropractic techniques for children are not the same as those for adults. Pediatric chiropractors study the differences of the pediatric spine and learn several low or non-force techniques to resolve spinal misalignments in children and infants. Many infants are adjusted by pediatric chiropractors within hours or days of their birth.
Several studies have found that chiropractic care for children is safe and effective. There are currently two safety and efficacy studies being pursued by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Associations. The preliminary results show an overwhelming benefit to children, with little to no adverse effects.
My child seems fine. Why should I have him checked?
More and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children. Many spinal problems begin as early as birth. Natural birthing methods, as well as cesarean sections, can stress an infant’s spine. Spinal and cranial misalignments can cause nervous system stress and be the underlying cause of many complaints such as colic, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances and chronic infections.
As an infant grows, spinal misalignments can occur as the child learns to hold his head up, roll, sit, crawl and walk. When your child begins physical childhood activities such as bike riding, skating and sports, simple yet significant spinal misalignments may occur. Ultimately, it is the role of the pediatric chiropractor to attempt to prevent accumulation of strains and stresses to the spine and allow the child to function at his highest level.
One of the most common reasons parents seek chiropractic care for their child is due to some type of trauma. However, regular chiropractic checkups can identify seemingly minor spinal misalignments, make the correction, and help avoid pain or health complaints that may follow. Every child has a unique response to the stressors in their lives. Therefore, each child will have their own optimal frequency of care. Just because a child has regular spinal checkups does not mean the child will need to be adjusted every visit.
