Backpacks and Spinal Health
Hauling a heavy backpack may cause serious postural misalignments resulting in neck, back & shoulder pain, headaches, and muscle & joint injuries.
Follow these steps to protect your child’s spinal health:
1. Wear both shoulder straps to distribute the weight evenly. Use a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps instead of narrow straps, which can hinder circulation.
2. Pack lightly. The backpack should never weigh more than 10-15% of the student’s body weight.
3. Organize the backpack so the heaviest items are closest to the back.
4. Wear backpacks close to the body, over the strongest back muscles. The straps should be tightened to the backpack rests two inches about the waist. A padded back is ideal to help reduce pressure and enhance comfort.
5. A waist strap is very helpful. It can help distribute the weight of the backpack more evenly.
